I was expecting three packages to be delivered, and I checked the Post Office’s “tracking” site to see when they were expected to be delivered. They weren’t expected to be delivered until early this week, the week of October 16th. We had plans out of town all day Saturday, so we left without giving our mail a second thought. When we returned late Saturday evening, there were our three packages, sitting on our front steps, soaking wet, right out in the elements. And, our envelopes were left out there, as well. Had we known the packages WERE to be delivered on Saturday, we certainly would have had a neighbor get them for us and put them in a dry place. It was no secret the weather was to be horrible ~ we had flash flood warnings, tornado warnings, and severe thunderstorm warnings. I just called the postmaster a little while ago.....she informed me that the carrier did what she was supposed to do: leave the packages on our doorstep. I told her that in the past, our carrier has put packages in plastic bags when the weather was questionable. The postmaster informed me they don’t have enough plastic bags for every box that comes through their post office. I told her there was an unlocked van and truck in the driveway....she informed me they are not allowed to leave them anywhere but on a front porch under a protective roof. I said that did not happen. The boxes were NOT under ANY protective roof. It was left out in the open, the boxes were soaked and caved in from the rain. And the envelopes were ruined. (Why weren’t the letters at least left in our pretty much weather proof mailbox?) The postmaster informed me it was a new carrier and she would talk to her. A little late now! And besides, what would she have done differently? Perhaps instead of suggesting we leave a Christmas gift for our carrier, the postmaster should be asking us for plastic bags, since there appears to be a shortage of plastic bags in our local post office.......
